When Books and Love Collide

Books and Love

True. Love. Waits.

What do these words mean to you?

There are probably a thousand different ways to define love and there could be a thousand different interpretations for a kind of love that precedes the word "wait."

True love waits for what? For the right one? Or do you mean true love waits until you're ready? Is it until you turn 30? Until God says it's time? Or until your life gets fixed? Or perhaps other questions would follow such as "Why wait?" Why wait if true love is already here?

If I were gifted with powers to read minds or an extraordinary vision to see thought bubbles above every head I've come across during last month's book fair, these are the reactions I would have gotten by the hundreds who received—and rejected the flyers we gave away. On these flyers, the name of our organization is clearly printed out as a direct message to all—True Love Waits.

It was my first time to participate in a promotions activity for TLW and I must say the experience made me realize that there are still a lot of work to do. Most singles would not hesitate to get the flyers we are extending to them even after they hear us say, "True Love Waits," but the opposite is true when we attempt to deliver the same message to couples or those we perceive as dating.

Upon hearing us or seeing the flyers, some would choose to ignore and to walk past us (and our extended arms) while others would give a "no thanks" gesture through their hands, their nod, or the way they smile and look at us. There were times when one from the couple would get the flyer and show it to the other, and the other would appear not interested. Again, if thought bubbles were visible to the naked eyes, we'd probably see this above either of them: "If you're willing to wait, I'm not." A sad truth indeed.

It was interesting to see varying reactions among singles and couples, guys and girls. We found out that the concept of waiting in terms of love is more appealing to singles than couples, and for couples, the guys are more frequently the ones who end up not interested to wait. But thinking about it, it really doesn't matter who is more willing to wait.

Waiting until the right time comes is not a choice that only works for a few; but a choice that we are all capable of making. Purity is a path we can take regardless of our past stories, our present inhibitions, and our relationship status - whether you're a single, in a relationship, even if it's complicated. Waiting until the right time comes should be a joint commitment for couples, a shared desire to preserve purity and to save sex after marriage.

An for us advocates, the work continues. The challenge is not to simply convince the youth to wait, but to first make known to them what true love is. Where do we find true love in the first place and how do we bring them to the One true source of true love?

The message is clear: To discover true love in our relationship with God and receive His plan of purity through waiting.

We pray for that day when we would truly and fully understand the meaning behind the words true love waits, which prove to be more powerful than simply saying I Iove you. Until then, we will not get tired of sharing our message to all, of extending our arms to reach the youth despite possible rejections in the next book fairs and events to come.

Yes, we are willing to wait until everybody else does. 🙂
